More than 40,000 people gathered at the White House on Monday for the annual Easter Egg Roll, hosted by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
Speaking from the White House balcony alongside the first lady and an Easter Bunny mascot, the president welcomed attendees with a light-hearted remark about the day’s weather. ‘It was a beautiful day yesterday, and it’s a beautiful day today. We don’t have to worry about sunburn but ... it looks like it’s not going to be raining,’ he said.
President Trump thanked the National Park Service for preparing the venue, stating, ‘The job they do in making everything so beautiful and spiffy, and I’m very difficult when it comes to that. I will tell you, very, very difficult. ... They have done an incredible job. You just have to look around and see.’
The president and first lady visited the egg roll area, where Trump signaled the start of a few races using a gold-toned whistle marked with the presidential seal. The couple also stopped by a station where children wrote cards to service members.
Later in the day, Melania Trump read “Bunny with a Big Heart” to children at the reading area. The story follows a forgetful rabbit who is injured and learns the value of kindness while recovering in bed.
The celebration also featured participation from some of Trump’s grandchildren, the children of his son Donald Trump Jr.
A special station was set up to promote the upcoming 250th anniversary of America’s founding, allowing guests to sign a miniature Declaration of Independence or dress as Founding Fathers. Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed various activity stations, live performances, and storytelling sessions.
In closing, President Trump gave a ‘special thank you’ to his wife for organizing the day’s event.
